Deer Park Wood is on a clay soil, and we have problems in times of heavy rainfall. In a continuing effort to keep the woodland paths free from deep mud, we reinforce them in various ways. This series of pictures documents one such project in November 2018.

We had ballast left over from our major north entrance project, and decided to concentrate on the worst sections between the woodland blocks on the east side of the wood. The new paths were created by rolling out a tough mat designed to stop the ballast sinking into the mud, then topping with ballast by moving a ‘sledge’ along the path line to contain the ballast.
